School stories have now been going strong for over a hundred years.  This is not surprising: no other fictional genre offers so much potential drama, all contained in one comparatively small space. For older readers they provide nostalgia plus occasionally sharper memories, often long forgotten. For children they can provide a glimpse of an ideal future as well as a warning about possible tribulations still to come. Ranging from extreme fantasy to today's often grimmer realities, these stories cover every important emotion from broad humour to fear, from trials and testing moments to final triumph.

Nicholas Tucker

This collection of papers constitutes the proceedings of a Children's Literature Conference held at Roehampton Institute in London in 1998. There are papers by Mary Cadogan, Rosemary Auchmuty, Isabel Quigly, Geoff Fox, Adèle Geras and Pat Pinsent and there is a brief introduction by Nicholas Tucker. The wide ranging papers consider the development of the school story by examining many classics of the genre.
